{"id":28511,"date":"2026-07-24T09:49:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T08:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nationalparks.ie\/?p=28511"},"modified":"2026-07-24T09:58:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T08:58:21","slug":"irelands-first-marine-national-park-to-be-supported-by-new-national-parks-legislation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nationalparks.ie\/ga\/mara-ciarrai\/irelands-first-marine-national-park-to-be-supported-by-new-national-parks-legislation\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland\u2019s first Marine National Park to be supported by new National Parks legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<style data-wp-block-html=\"css\">\nblockquote {\n margin: 0 1rem;\n}\n<\/style>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O\u2019Sullivan TD, has today (Friday 24<sup>th<\/sup> July 2026) announced his intention to develop a National Parks Bill which will place P\u00e1irc N\u00e1isi\u00fanta na Mara, Ciarra\u00ed Ireland\u2019s first Marine National Park on a dedicated statutory footing for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal to develop the Bill was brought to Cabinet earlier this week by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To date, National Parks have been cared for through a range of legislative and administrative arrangements. Today\u2019s announcement on the development of a dedicated, comprehensive legislative framework will enable the State to go further by establishing management planning and governance frameworks, developing transparent designation processes, facilitating public access, recreation, education and research, and aligning Ireland with international best practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">P\u00e1irc N\u00e1isi\u00fanta na Mara will benefit from the proposed National Parks Bill, which will establish a clear statutory framework for the protection and management of its marine, coastal and island ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Covering approximately 31,000 hectares, the park protects habitats of national and international importance, including coastal waters, lands and islands along the Dingle coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Minister O\u2019Sullivan<\/strong> said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe forthcoming National Parks Bill will represent one of the most significant developments in nature conservation legislation in the history of the State, and it couldn\u2019t come at a more important time. We know that we need to lead nature restoration on public land, and our National Parks are central to achieving this. I want Ireland\u2019s first National Parks Bill to make the goal for these amazing places crystal clear: to protect and restore nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>He continued:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cP\u00e1irc N\u00e1isi\u00fanta na Mara, Ciarra\u00ed represents a new chapter in Irish conservation. This legislation will help ensure that Ireland\u2019s marine biodiversity is protected and restored through a strong and enduring legal framework.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Philip Buckley, Divisional Manager, P\u00e1irc N\u00e1isi\u00fanta na Mara, Ciarra\u00ed<\/strong>, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarine conservation presents unique opportunities and challenges. This legislation will provide the governance framework needed to support the long-term protection and restoration of these globally significant marine and coastal ecosystems.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Niall \u00d3 Donnch\u00fa, Director General,<\/strong> NPWS, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI warmly welcome the Government\u2019s decision to draft a Bill to provide a modern statutory framework for the designation and stewardship of our National Parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we look to the future, it is essential that our National Parks are supported by legislation that is fit for contemporary purpose: legislation that clarifies operations and management across the National Park system.
