Rut Watch

Sunday 12th October 2025

11a.m. to 4p.m.

Wicklow is home to a large population of wild deer. They are particularly impressive in autumn when the males challenge each other and vie for females. This is called the ‘rut’, and is always a great time to watch our wild deer.

On our National Park’s Rut Watch event, we shall have telescopes close to the Glenealo footbridge on our White walking trail (known as the ‘Spinc and Glenealo Valley’ trail). Anyone walking this trail between 11am and 4 pm is welcome to stop by, view the deer through the telescopes and discuss the deer and their ecology with our staff.

Where: Glendalough, at the Glenealo footbridge on the ‘Spinc & Glenealo Valley’ walking trail (white arrows). Participants are advised to visit to the Information Office (Upper Lake, Glendalough) to get directions to the telescopes before setting out.

Practicalities: The Spinc & Glenealo Valley trail takes 3 to 3.5 hours. This is a hill-walk with rough ground and steep climbs. All are welcome, although the hike may be too strenuous for young children. Participants will not be escorted on the hike. Hiking boots and rain gear are recommended. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Dogs: All dogs must be kept on leads throughout the entire National Park, but we ask participants not to bring dogs to this event. We will all see more deer, and the deer will be closer, if there are no dogs in the vicinity.

Charge: This event is free of charge, but please be aware that the Upper Lake car park (Wicklow Co. Co.) has a €4 charge.

Booking: Booking is not necessary.

Bad Weather Protocol: This event will be cancelled in the event of bad weather. If in doubt, ring our Information Office More Information: National Park Information Office – 0404 45425 (open 10am – 5:30pm)
