Swimming in Mountain Lakes and Rivers
As Ireland basks under a yellow high temperature warning, people flock to water to swim and cool down. Please be aware that there are no lifeguards or approved safe swimming spots within Wicklow Mountains National Park.
The lakes throughout the park have been carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago, and are deep, dark and cold. Swimming in these lakes is not forbidden but does require extreme caution.
The water in mountain lakes remains dangerously cold even during summer and can lead to cold water shock. Additionally, currents, strong winds, and hidden drop-offs can quickly overwhelm even seasoned swimmers.
Please note that all inflatables (lilos, rings, floating toys, etc) are banned on our lakes. They can be blown offshore by sudden mountain gusts in seconds. Pull buoys used by open water swimmers are permitted. All boats, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards are also forbidden, except under permit.
The Upper Lake in Glendalough in particular, often attracts large numbers of families in hot weather. Please be aware that there is a steep drop off quite close to the beach area. Parents should ensure that their children stay well within their depth.
