Criunniú na nÓg
Summary
Magic Melodies of our Bog recognizes that our traditional tunes have been inspired by the rich natural heritage of bogs. Being a ubiquitous feature of the landscape it’s not surprising that they’ve inspired traditional tunes. Inspired by the Irish name for the symbol for Wild Nephin National Park, an Feadóg Bhuí (Golden Plover), and one of the winter migrants to the bogs, the Greenland White-fronted Goose. We will endeavor to learn an Irish jig led by Caroline O’Malley, to be danced to the Geese on the Bog tune. Participants who are not inclined to dance can endeavor to learn the tune on tin whistle (an feadóg stáin) led by local musician Martin Hughes. The dance and music lesson will be followed by a guided walk led by Michael Chambers and Margaret Flaherty, with musical and dance performances along the way.
Brilliant Birds of the Bog with Melanie Whelan Illustration is calling for a ‘flock’ of young artists to help create a paper collage mural. Just like the birds of the bog we will work together to create a communal piece of work that celebrates the Birds of the Bog. What should we add to add to our mural? What do birds eat? Where do they sleep? Michael Chambers, Head Guide at Wild Nephin National Park and Margaret Flaherty, Community Engagement Officer with LIFE IP Wild Atlantic Nature and ecologist, will be on hand to show how birds make the bog their home, and answer all our bird-brained questions.
We have a wonderful day planned for this year’s Criunniú na nÓg on Saturday June 15th at the Ballycroy Visitor Centre in Wild Nephin National Park.
Birds of Our Bogs invites young artists to spread their wings and soar into a world of creativity and wonder. Birds of our Bogs is a coming together of music, dance and art to create awareness and celebrate the natural heritage of bogs, particularly the bird life.
The programme of events will consist of two events: Magic Melodies of Our Bogs and Brilliant Birds of the Bog
