This month’s object is an Eighteenth Century marble bust of Gaius Marius, a well-known Roman general and senator. It was originally purchased by Henry McIlhenny the last private owner of Glenveagh Castle here in Glenveagh National Park.

During the Eighteenth Century, artists and architects found a renewed interest and appreciation for classical design which was reflected in the production of grand neo-classical buildings or fine works of art such as this one.
