Family Bat Night
Our ever-popular Family Bat Night is aimed at all ages. The event kicks off with a family friendly Bat Talk in our Education Centre.
We then head over to the National Park Information Office to watch Soprano Pipistrelles emerging from their daytime roost. Participants are then welcome to join us as we search for bats in flight using our bat detectors along the dark, wooded paths of Glendalough. Other species of bats that have been encountered on previous walks include: Pipistrelle, Leisler’s, long-eared and Daubenton’s bat.
Participants are welcome to come to both events or to one or other. Families of young children often like to watch the bats emerge from the roost, but to then head home to bed rather than to go on the walk.

Booking: Free of charge. Booking not necessary.
Parking: Parking is available at the County Council Upper Lake Car Park, A98W778 (charges apply). The car park will remain open for the duration of this event. But will close promptly thereafter.
Practicalities:
The Education Centre is on the Miners’ Rd, beside the Upper Lake, and involves a 200m walk from the Upper Lake car park.
The Information Office is 100m from the Upper Lake car park. The Bat Walk covers approximately 3 kilometres on both hard and rough surfaced paths on the valley floor. Bring a torch and insect repellent! Dress for the outdoors and bring waterproofs just in case.
This is a free event. Except for guide or assistance dogs, dogs are not permitted on National Park events. For more information, please phone the National Park Information Office, 0404 45425.
