This weekend saw several NPWS managed sites around Wild Nephin National Park affected by major fire incidents. A fire has completely destroyed the Claggan Boardwalk, and a separate fire is ongoing at the forest at Letterkeen. Please note that a large forest fire that started last night is burning its way through the Nephin Forest at Letterkeen on the east side of the national park. Following damage sustained during storm Èowyn, the following sites will remain closed to the public: Ballycroy Visitor Centre and Education Centre, Bangor Trail, Western Way (Shramore to Altnabrooky Section), Letterkeen Loop Trails, Srahrevagh Loop Trails, and all bothies and camping areas. These sites will reopen at 11:00 am on Monday, 27/01/2025, after full safety checks
Due to the current Red Weather Warning in place for Co. Mayo, valid from 04:00 Friday 24/01/2025 to 12:00 24/01/2025, the following sites will be closed to the public: Ballycroy Visitor Centre and Education Centre, Bangor Trail, Western Way (Shramore to Altnabrooky Section), Letterkeen Loop Trails, Srahrevagh Loop Trails, and all bothies and camping areas.
Please be aware that conditions at the Ballycroy Visitor Centre and the Claggan Coastal Trail are very slippery and should be avoided during this time. The Shramore and Kennagh roads to Letterkeen on the remote East Side of the National Park are very dangerous and should also be avoided. We appeal to everyone to stay
