This month’s object is a wooden heat screen. It originally belonged to Henry McIlhenny, the last private owner of Glenveagh Castle, here in Glenveagh National Park.

During the Eighteenth and early Nineteenth Centuries, women would often wear thick wax-based make-up. Portable heat screens such as this one would prevent the wax from melting and dripping onto their expensive dresses.
